Square's published rate card is the clearest in-person flat-rate in the market. In-person tap or dip is 2.6% + $0.15 on the Free plan, dropping to 2.4% + $0.15 on Premium. Online is 3.3% + $0.30 on Free (the trade-off) and 2.9% + $0.30 on Plus/Premium. Keyed is 3.5% + $0.15 regardless of plan. Square does not charge a chargeback fee.

What Square is best for

Square wins for small in-person merchants and omnichannel SMBs who need one platform for retail, online, and invoicing without integrating two systems. In-person economics are the cleanest in the flat-rate set.

The trade-off is online: 3.3% + $0.30 on the Free plan is materially worse than Stripe headline. Plus/Premium close the gap but add a subscription fee that only makes sense above a few thousand a month.
