Stripe publishes one of the cleanest rate cards in the industry. Standard online cards are 2.9% + $0.30, ACH Direct Debit is 0.8% capped at $5, and the dispute structure was restructured 17 June 2025 to a two-tier $15 receipt fee plus $15 counter fee. Interchange-plus is available under custom contract above roughly $80K monthly volume but is not published.

Stripe is the default choice for developer-led ecommerce and SaaS businesses that want published rates without negotiation. The product surface (Billing, Checkout, Connect, Identity, Tax, Radar, Terminal) is the broadest of any flat-rate gateway. Documentation is exceptional and library coverage is universal.
The trade-off shows up at scale: above roughly $80K monthly volume, the published flat rate becomes uncompetitive versus published interchange-plus from Helcim or negotiated interchange-plus from quote-only enterprise acquirers (Adyen, Worldpay, Checkout.com). Stripe will offer custom interchange-plus but only under NDA, so it does not appear on any public comparison.
“Smart Disputes waives the $15 counter fee and replaces it with a 30% success fee on the recovered amount. The $15 receipt fee on the disputed transaction is still charged and is non-refundable even when the dispute is won.”
The number on the homepage of Stripe is rarely the number a finance team books. Below are the line items that almost always show up, sourced from the same vendor pricing page where possible.
Worked example for an illustrative ecommerce merchant (illustrative example, not a real company): $100,000 monthly volume, $85 average ticket, 1,176 transactions a month, 5% international card share, 0.5% dispute rate.
Excludes counter fee on disputes contested manually (refunded on win) and any custom interchange-plus that Stripe may offer at this volume tier under NDA.
Industry-standard published rate card, deepest documentation, most extensive product surface area. Custom interchange-plus available for high-volume merchants under NDA.
