What Stripe is best for

Stripe is the default choice for developer-led ecommerce and SaaS businesses that want published rates without negotiation. The product surface (Billing, Checkout, Connect, Identity, Tax, Radar, Terminal) is the broadest of any flat-rate gateway. Documentation is exceptional and library coverage is universal.

The trade-off shows up at scale: above roughly $80K monthly volume, the published flat rate becomes uncompetitive versus published interchange-plus from Helcim or negotiated interchange-plus from quote-only enterprise acquirers (Adyen, Worldpay, Checkout.com). Stripe will offer custom interchange-plus but only under NDA, so it does not appear on any public comparison.

Smart Disputes waives the $15 counter fee and replaces it with a 30% success fee on the recovered amount. The $15 receipt fee on the disputed transaction is still charged and is non-refundable even when the dispute is won.
