The Stripe two-tier rule, correctly stated
Since 17 Jun 2025, Stripe charges two dispute fees per chargeback. The $15 receipt fee is NON-refundable, even on a win. The separate $15 counter fee is refunded on a win. Stripe Smart Disputes waives the counter fee for a 30% success fee on the disputed amount. Smart Disputes economics on Stripe
- Stripe Smart Disputes waives the $15 refundable counter fee in exchange for a 30% success fee on the recovered amount.
- For a $200 disputed transaction won, Smart Disputes costs $60 (30% of $200) instead of $15. Smart Disputes is cheaper only if your alternative would lose.
- The $15 non-refundable receipt fee applies regardless of which path you take.
